Summer Learning That Feels Like Play: Why Hands-On Discovery Matters

June 25, 2026 //  by McGinnis Woods School & Preschool

Summer camp at McGinnis Woods Country Day School is filled with laughter, creativity, and fun—but every activity is also an opportunity for children to explore, question, and discover.

Recently, campers explored the fascinating world of the human brain through a special visit from Mad Scientist Atlanta. Students learned how the brain and nervous system work while participating in interactive demonstrations that sparked curiosity and encouraged questions. Rather than simply watching a presentation, children became active participants in the learning process.

That same spirit of discovery continues throughout camp each day. From STEM challenges and science experiments to art projects and collaborative activities, campers are encouraged to think critically, solve problems, and learn by doing.

One of the things that sets McGinnis Woods apart is our commitment to hands-on learning. Whether students are enrolled during the school year or attending summer camp, we believe children learn best when they can explore concepts for themselves.

Instead of memorizing information, students build understanding by asking questions, experimenting, creating, and making connections. These experiences help children develop confidence alongside academic skills—an approach that keeps learning meaningful and memorable.

Building Skills That Last Beyond Summer

While campers are having fun, they’re also strengthening skills they’ll use throughout the coming school year:

  • Critical thinking and problem-solving
  • Scientific observation and inquiry
  • Creativity and innovation
  • Collaboration and communication
  • Confidence in trying new things

At McGinnis Woods, summer isn’t simply about keeping children busy. It’s about creating experiences that inspire curiosity, encourage discovery, and help every child develop a lifelong love of learning.

Whether they’re conducting science experiments, exploring STEM activities, creating art, or learning from special guests, every day offers a new opportunity to grow.

That’s what learning should look like.
